The FCAC (Financial Consumer Agency of Canada) was founded in 2001. It was established to consolidate and strengthen oversight of consumer protection measures in the federally regulated financial sector, and to expand consumer education. While some consumer protection activities existed previously, they were dispersed among various federal entities. The FCAC's creation was one in a series of initiatives resulting from an extensive period of study and public consultation on financial sector reform.

L'ACFC (Agence de la consommation en matière financière du Canada) a été créée en 2001. Son mandat est de regrouper et de renforcer les activités visant à surveiller l'application des mesures de protection des consommateurs dans le secteur financier assujetties à la réglementation fédérale, ainsi qu'à aider les consommateurs à en apprendre davantage. Certaines activités de protection des consommateurs existaient déjà, mais elles étaient réparties entre différentes entités fédérales. La création de l'ACFC est l'une des initiatives prises à la suite d'une longue période d'étude et de consultations publiques portant sur la réforme du secteur financier.
